Human violence that makes big news is either violence on a grand scale, in which case Philip believes they would already know about it, or violence that follows some kind of pattern and he's always forced to wonder what it is about the act of killing that brings these people such pleasure. He and Reid both know what he's capable of, the things he's done, but Philip has never killed someone for the fun of it and when he considers it, he doesn't see how it could be fun. Necessary, certainly, and there are times when he's taken perverse enjoyment out of violence that was well deserved, but beyond that, he simply doesn't understand.
Then again, he supposes that's why men like Reid are needed. To untangle the mess of those who commit such acts.
"Very human, so you're in for a long few days," he says. "Weeks perhaps. Months? I don't know much about how such men are caught these days." And in the past, it seems they were rarely brought to justice unless they made a mistake somewhere along the way. The law enforcement system has certainly improved since the world Philip had known.
